The Mongru
The civilization of the Mongru people is a community was built on an ancient civilization that went extinct long ago. Explorers from the main land in the early part of the 12th century discovered this small group of islands. On the island they discovered strange totem type structures, which they left alone thinking it was bad luck to interfere with another religious system. In the middle of the island was to be the source of their islands wealth, the volcano. They harvest the heat to warm their water and homes and also to melt sand from the large beaches in order to export large amounts of glass for building to the main land. The volcano, later discovered, is actually the guardian of the island. It has the power to raise the dead and attack the island itself, if disturbed. The new inhabitants of the island are sure the fish is responsible for the other civilizations destruction. They make monthly human sacrifices by putting one of the islands prisoners into the lava pit, which is actually the fishs stomach. For the average individual life mostly revolves around the production of glass from the volcano, or fishing for the village markets. In order to keep the community functioning an island meeting is held on the main island once every two months. Its held as a public forum between the Elders and the people of the islands in one of the overlooking the rest of the land. Markets are also held during this time of the year for people to trade their goods and buy what they need for the following months. Transportation between the islands can either be done by the large bridges between the islands, by the Orbagros (giant floating fish), or by taking boats. The Orbagros are a unique feature to the island. They are friendly sea creatures that are tamed and raised by the islanders in order to help haul the glass on the barges around. They are also used in Orbagros Races, which are held once every year to see who races the fastest Orbagro. The wild Orbagros travel in large herds in the ocean, and graze on sea kelp. In the present time the island isnt as prospering as it once was. The governing system of the elders is beginning to crumble since they cant find the right individuals to replace the elders that have resigned from their posts or passed on. The monthly sacrifices have mot been occurring and islands systems are out of balance. The guardian of the sea sends the ghosts of the ancient civilization as a reminder to the people of what will happen if their own civilization continues to crumble.
